The Gallagher Girls books by Ally Carter are a series of young adult books about a secret academy for spies. It’s all about secret missions, spy school, friendship and romance.
The series starts as a fun story about one girl, Cammie, juggling her first crush and spy school but as it develops the story becomes darker and more mysterious.
There’s still plenty of teen drama and romance but the story is more about the plot to uncover what the dangerous Circle of Cavan is and, most importantly, what do they want with Cammie.
Think James Bond and his Spectre drama but the main characters are teenage girls.
It’s great.

Gallagher Girls Summary
Warning: There may be spoilers in the below Gallagher Girls summary if you have not read the entire series yet.
I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls Book 1)
Cammie isn’t your typical 15-year-old girl. She’s grown up in an all-girls boarding school called Gallagher Academy, which her mother just so happens to be the headmistress of, and she doesn’t really get much time to experience life outside of the school grounds.
But Gallagher Academy isn’t just any boarding school, it’s a school for spies (though, of course, nobody will admit it).
All the girls who attend Gallagher Academy have extraordinary IQs, can speak multiple languages and probably know a hundred or so different methods to kill a man but none of them knows how to talk to a boy. In fact, most of them probably haven’t ever interacted with one.
One day whilst on an outing as part of her Cove Ops class, she bumps into a boy, Josh, who really shouldn’t have seen her at all given that she was undercover, and suddenly Cammie’s life is way more interesting than it ever was before.

Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy (Gallagher Girls Book 2)
It’s the start of a new semester at Gallagher Academy and Cammie is trying to start afresh.
After the disaster at the end of I’d Tell You I Love You But Then I’d Have To Kill You when her non-spy boyfriend, Josh, attempted to ‘save’ her whilst she was in the middle of a cover operations test, she’s got to regain the trust of her teachers and her fellow classmates (and try to stop thinking about Josh).
However, when she arrives back at school, she starts to notice some odd things. For one, an entire corridor of the school has been ‘locked’, something unheard of at Gallagher Academy given that every single student knows how to pick a lock anyway.
Cammie and her friends are determined to uncover the secret that the headmistress, also Cammie’s mother, is hiding and what plans are about to be unveiled in the new locked corridor.
Cammie’s Josh drama from the previous semester convinced those in charge of spy training that although the girls have the highest IQs in the country, they don’t know a thing about boys and they’re going to do something about it.

Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover (Gallagher Girls Book 3)
Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover starts off in the school holidays as Cammie goes to visit her friend and daughter of the future vice president, Macey McHenry.
Things seem pretty normal at first until the pair of friends, and Preston Winters, son of the future president, end up on the derelict roof of a hotel.
Cammie’s spy instincts kick in, but there’s nothing she can do to stop an oncoming helicopter that’s heading straight for them.
Macey and Cammie manage to get Preston out of the line of fire and kick some serious butt but not without a whole heap of injuries and a thoroughly traumatic experience.
It’s campaign time for Macey’s father and so she’s being transported to and from major publicity events but ever since the attacks, everyone has been on edge and the security has been topped up.
Cammie’s mysterious Aunt Abby appears and takes on the role of Macey’s special security agent. Since she is a former Gallagher Girl herself, none of their spy school secrets are revealed.
Although there has been no trace of the group that attacked Macey and Cammie on the roof, “The Operatives”, Bex, Liz and Cammie, are still highly concerned for their best friend’s safety, so they start making investigations of their own.
Things don’t go so smoothly but they need to find out who the group that attacked Macey was and what they wanted.

Only the Good Spy Young (Gallagher Girls Book 4)
Only The Good Spy Young begins during the winter break and Cammie is staying in London with her best friend, Bex, and her MI6 spy parents.
At the end of Don’t Judge A Girl By Her Cover, we found out that The Circle of Cavan was in fact after Cammie, not Macey as we had first thought.
No one knows why they’re after Cammie but since the several attempted kidnapping incidents in Gallagher Girls book 3, she’s been assigned her own security personnel that follow her everywhere.
One day when Cammie, Bex and her parents are ice-skating around the Tower of London, she sees Zac. Zac has been popping up unannounced where Cammie is for a while now, though we still don’t know how or why.
He disappears before answering any of Cammie’s questions as usual but he does reveal that he was supposed to meet Joe Solomon, Cammie’s CoveOps teacher, but he failed to show up – a bad sign.
Just as Cammie is returning her skates, the lights suddenly go out and she is grabbed by someone. It turns out that this someone is Mr Solomon, much to Cammie’s surprise.
He seems crazed and keeps trying to warn Cammie of something, but she doesn’t really understand what he’s saying. Bex’s parents eventually catch up to Mr Solomon and Cammie and are treating Mr Solomon like a threat, which confuses both Bex and Cammie.
It is revealed that Joe Solomon does is in fact a double agent working for The Circle of Cavan, but things still don’t add up.
The story really gets going once they return to Gallagher Academy and Cammie and her friends start trying to figure out who they can and cannot trust and nothing is as it seems.

Out of Sight, Out of Time (Gallagher Girls Book 5)
At the end of Only The Good Spy Young, Cammie was just sneaking out of Gallagher Academy having decided that she was putting everyone else’s lives at risk by being around her.
Out of Sight, Out of Time begins with Cammie in a strange place and she has absolutely no recollection of how she got there. She’s in extremely bad shape and according to the nun who’s with her when she wakes up, she’s been sleeping for six whole days.
To make matters worse, it turns out that four months have passed since Cammie left her family and friends at Gallagher Academy. She hasn’t got the faintest idea what she was doing during those four months or how she came to be in a nunnery in the Alps.
As soon as Cammie can, she calls for help and is reunited with her friends and family, but things will never be the same for Cammie.
Cammie has been badly damaged by the traumatic events that have befallen her during the past four months and though she can’t remember any of it, it’s evident that it wasn’t a breezy summer vacation for Cammie.
She left Gallagher Academy to seek out the Circle of Cavan, who were trying to kidnap her for unknown reasons. However, with a really bad case of amnesia, we have no idea whether or not she found them and if she did, what happened.
Cammie’s world has been turned completely upside down with her family and friends treating her like she’s about to break. She’s determined to get her memory back, no matter how painful those memories might be.

United We Spy (Gallagher Girls Book 6)
Cammie returns for her final semester at Gallagher Academy but things still aren’t right with the world. The Circle is planning something. Something big.
As the Circle have moles everywhere, Cammie doesn’t trust the CIA, the FBI or Interpol to do their job and track down the circle members.
She and her friends go on the run and try to figure out what the Circle is planning and how to stop them. The stakes are much higher on this mission, not just for themselves, but for the rest of the world.
