Daisy Jones and the Six was a huge success. It was a bestseller, and it won the Goldsboro Books Glass Bell Award in 2020. A miniseries, created by Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, is currently in development, and the audiobook was one of Apple Book’s Best Audiobooks of 2019.

It follows a famous band, The Six, as they catapult into stardom in the 1970s. When a popular upcoming singer Daisy Jones joins the band, their success continues to grow beyond their wildest dreams. But of course, there’s a catch.

Each of the band members deals with fame in a different way, and when the relationships between them become more complicated, events start to spiral out of control.

This is a glamorous, exciting, dramatic, and emotional read. It’s character-driven, but easy to read. It’s the kind of book you can’t put down. It’s also an ideal choice for book clubs!

Daisy Jones and the Six has a slightly different format to Jenkins-Reid’s other novels. The story unfolds as a series of interviews with various characters.

What did you think of this format? Did you find that it impacted the way you imagined the setting?

Some characters – for example, Daisy, Billy, and Camilla – have longer, more detailed sections. Other characters have shorter chunks of the narrative instead.

Do you feel that all the characters were given enough backstory? Would you have liked to see more or less of each character?

Daisy’s character is complicated and turbulent right from the start. She had a privileged upbringing in terms of wealth but not so much in terms of love and affection from her family. As the novel develops, she has to learn some profound life lessons.

What did you think of Daisy’s character at the beginning of the book, compared to the end of the book? Do you think she grew as a person?

Billy and Graham are the backbones of the band. As brothers, they go through periods of peace and periods of conflict with each other over the course of the book. Their sibling dynamic is fascinating, given their respective positions in the band, and Graham sometimes feels slighted.

What did you think of their relationship? Do you think they cared for each other enough as their fame grew?

Billy’s rockstar life starts stereotypically: he indulges in plenty of drinking, drugs, and groupies. He hits a crisis point during Camilla’s first pregnancy when he begins to spiral out of control in the face of impending fatherhood.

What did you think of Graham’s journey? Were you surprised that he managed to stay clean throughout the novel, despite the temptations around him?

Graham and Karen have an up-and-down relationship, with some challenging moments near the end of the book. They have very difficult values and expectations right from the beginning, which obviously becomes trickier to manage the longer they stay together.

What did you think of their developing relationship? Did you sympathise more with Graham or Karen in the end?

Daisy spirals out of control the more famous she gets. She uses drugs to keep going but never seems to be able to settle down or be alone with her thoughts without substances.

Why do you think Daisy ended up in this position? What was her motivation to keep doing drugs?

Jenkins-Reid often discusses the dark side of fame in her novels. For example, we see what happens when fame makes a person selfish and greedy in Malibu Rising, and we get a glimpse of the pressure of Hollywood in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

How do you think fame and fortune impact the characters in Daisy Jones and the Six?

The songs in Daisy Jones and the Six are searingly honest, and often reflect what the characters are feeling in that particular moment in time. Take, for example, Billy’s song Impossible Woman:

‘Let her hold you.

Let her ease your soul.

Sand through fingers.

Wild horse, but she’s just a cold

Dancing barefoot in the snow.’

This song has a pretty significant impact on Daisy and the rest of the band.

How do you think the songs shaped the story as it unfolded? Did you have a favourite song?

Daisy and Billy have a complicated relationship. Their love for each other is obvious but also dark and troubling. Aside from the fact that Billy wants to be loyal to his wife, Camilla, Daisy is also the worst influence on him in terms of staying clean. Despite this, he can’t help but be fascinated with her.

Do you think Billy could have truly loved Daisy if they could get together? Do you think part of her appeal to him was that she lived the party lifestyle he wasn’t allowed to have?

Camilla is an integral character in the book, despite not being part of the band itself. Despite everything he puts her through, she sticks with Billy throughout, and she raises their children while he travels the world and focuses on the band. She seems contented with this, although it’s not an easy journey for her.

What do you think motivates Camilla to stay with Billy? What did you think of her character in general? Would you have liked to see more of her perspective?

At the end of the book, Daisy finally comes to terms with the fact that she loves Billy, but can’t be with him. It’s an emotional scene, and leaves both Billy and Daisy running in opposite directions to escape how they feel.

Shortly after this, Camilla and Daisy have a confrontation.

What did you think of Camilla’s words to Daisy during this exchange? Do you think she reacted fairly to the situation?

Towards the end of the story, we discover the true identity of the writer.

Did you see this twist coming? Did you think it worked for the story?

At the end of the book, we see the band going their separate ways, and find out a little of what happened to their lives afterwards. The book focuses on Camilla and Billy right at the end.

Were you satisfied with where each band member ended up? Do you think Billy will follow Camilla’s request at the end of the book?
