Where Is Word on the Water?
You’ll find Word on the Water on Regent’s Canal Towpath near King’s Cross.
It sits right by Granary Square, one of the loveliest areas around King’s Cross.
With waterside seating and nearby cafés, it’s easy to turn a quick stop at the book barge into a slow afternoon.
Although the shop used to travel up and down the canal network, it now has a permanent mooring here, which makes planning your visit much easier.
What Makes Word on the Water So Special?
Plenty of London bookshops are beautiful.
Plenty are historic.

Word on the Water is the only floating bookstore in London, and the novelty of stepping onto a boat to browse books simply never wears off.

On one visit, I arrived to find a live acoustic guitar performance happening on board. A small crowd had gathered along the canal, listening as music drifted across the water.
It felt spontaneous and wonderfully uncommercial – just books, music and (for once) sunshine.
The shop regularly hosts small live music sessions and literary events, so it’s not just a place to buy books, but a community space.
The owner is really friendly, and if you’re lucky, you may also be greeted by an adorable resident dog.
It’s these kinds of details that make the whole experience feel special.
Is Word on the Water Worth Visiting?
In short: absolutely.
Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s worth stopping by for the atmosphere alone.
It’s one of those rare London spots that still feels like a hidden gem, despite being (relatively) well known now.
For visitors to London, it offers something distinctly different from the city’s grand flagship bookshops.
For locals, it’s a reminder that there are still pockets of creativity tucked between glass office blocks and redeveloped spaces.
