Bibliotheque: Must-Visit New York Bookstore, Cafe and Wine Bar

In the lead-up to my visit to New York City, there was one place I knew I had to make time for: Bibliotheque.

This establishment is a triple threat: a bookshop, cafe and wine bar.

And, somehow, it excels at all three.

As someone who loves books, cosy corners, and anywhere that blends reading with good food and drink, this spot had been on my radar for months, and I couldn’t wait to visit for myself.

Stepping inside for the first time, I immediately understood the hype.

The front area looks, at first glance, like a standard café: bar seating, a handful of tables, people tapping away on laptops, the gentle hum of espresso machines.

But keep walking, because the magic of Bibliotheque is in the back.

The space opens up dramatically into a large, beautifully designed room filled with big, squishy sofas and deep armchairs that practically beg you to sink into them with a new read.

Booths and tables line the edges of the room, creating little nooks for reading, working, or catching up quietly with a friend.

The vibes, quite simply, are immaculate. A large skylight sits in the centre of the café, flooding the entire room with natural light, beautiful chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and chill upbeat music plays softly in the background.

When I visited, most people were quietly reading, working, or studying, and it very much feels like the kind of place where you can genuinely get things done or lose yourself in a book without distraction.

One of the things I love about Bibliotheque is how well it caters to different moods and times of day.

On the drinks front, they offer a wide range of coffee and tea options, perfect for a slow morning or an afternoon pick-me-up.

But then there’s the other side of their personality: wine.

Whether you’re winding down after work or settling in for a low-key evening with a book, ordering a glass of wine while surrounded by bookshelves feels like exactly the right way to romanticise your life.

On the food front, they keep things simple. During the day, you’ll find pastries and sandwiches – enough to fuel a working session or accompany your book.

In the evenings, they switch to small plates, which fit perfectly with the atmosphere and the wine bar side of the space. It’s not a full restaurant, but it’s more than enough to make a visit feel complete.

Of course, as much as I love a good coffee-wine hybrid space, it’s the bookshop element that really captured my heart.

Bibliotheque offers an impressively large and well-curated selection of books across ages and genres. Everything on the shelves is available to buy, and the layout makes browsing a pleasure rather than a hunt.

The left-side wall is devoted to general fiction — a brilliant stretch of novels that spans literary, contemporary, and everything in between.
The back wall houses non-fiction, including self-help, memoirs, philosophy, and travel.
The left side (as you move deeper into the space) includes thrillers and horror, romance, classics, middle grade, and YA.

The staff are also genuinely lovely and happy to help you find something, recommend a title, or chat about your favourites without ever being pushy.

Bibliotheque opened at the end of 2023, and it’s already become a well-loved hangout for students, freelancers, readers, and anyone looking for a beautiful space to spend a few hours.

You’ll see people with laptops, people deep into novels, people sketching or journalling – it attracts a mix of creative and bookish energy that feels distinctly New York.

Laptop use is allowed, but there’s only free Wi-Fi for 90 minutes, which prevents the space from turning into an all-day coworking hub.

They’re also building a sense of community through regular events. Bibliotheque hosts its own book club, which feels very on brand, and they also put on movie nights and “books and board games” evenings.

It’s refreshing to find a bookish space that isn’t just about selling books but about creating a place where readers and locals can connect.

I really wish there was something like this local to me!

I’d been excited about visiting Bibliotheque for months, so I was so pleased that it lived up (exceeded, really), my expectations.

Between the natural light, the cosy seating, the thoughtful curation of books, the brilliant drinks menu, and the gentle, creative atmosphere, I could have happily returned every day of my trip.

Twice was all I managed.

One of my best friends has just moved to New York, and my parting gift to her was a Bibliotheque gift card for her and her husband to enjoy.

That probably sums up how I feel about it better than anything: it’s somewhere I want the people I love to experience, too.

Whether you’re visiting NYC for the first time or you live in the city and are looking for a new favourite reading spot, Bibliotheque deserves a place at the top of your list.
