18 Top Tips for Universal Orlando to Maximise Your Experience

Planning a trip to Universal Orlando theme parks can feel a little overwhelming, especially if you want to squeeze in all the best rides, shows and magical moments in just a few days.

With 5 areas to visit, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, Volcano Bay and CityWalk, there’s a lot to pack in.

When I spent a full week there, I quickly realised that planning in advance was absolutely essential.

The days were long (we were up between 6 and 7am most mornings!), but it was so worth it to maximise our time in the parks.

That’s why I’ve put together these Universal Orlando tips to help you make the most of your trip, too.

From smart planning strategies to queue-dodging tricks, these Universal Orlando tips and tricks are designed to make your visit smoother, easier and far more fun.

If you’re visiting Universal Orlando Resort for the first time, these 18 tips will help you experience the best of Universal Orlando without the stress.

Honestly, this was my favourite holiday ever ever, definitely one of my core memories, so let me show you the best way to do Universal Orlando Resort and help you make your trip just as magical.

14 General Tips for Universal Orlando Resort

Stay at one of the Universal hotels for early entry & express passes

Staying at one of the on-site Universal Orlando Resort hotels that offers Early Park Admission is absolutely essential if you want to get ahead of the crowds.

Yes, it’s more expensive than staying off-site, but then so is any trip to Universal Orlando, and the extra hour (or sometimes more) you gain inside the parks can make a significant difference, especially if you’re visiting at a peak time.

Early access gives you the chance to hit the big rides before the queues build up, meaning less time waiting and more time immersed in the fun.

Universal Orlando hotel guests and other selected groups can access the theme parks up to one hour before the park opens. These hotels include:

• Loews Royal Pacific Resort
• Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
• Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort

• Universal Aventura Resort

Budget-permitting, I’d recommend going one step further and opting for a hotel that offers express passes, too. These hotels are the Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, and Loews Royal Pacific Resort.

I stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando, and the experience was fantastic.

The hotel has a walkway that directly leads you to the parks, which makes for a lovely morning walk and early morning entry a breeze.

For those who don’t fancy the walk, there are other complimentary transfer options like the water shuttle, so you can arrive at the parks by boat. Pretty cool!

Plus, the hotel itself is amazing, and it was easy to pop back to the hotel for a few hours in the afternoon for a relaxed afternoon to avoid peak time in the park.

There’s a stunning pool, lots of bars and restaurants and live entertainment on some evenings.

If you value comfort, time-saving, and a little luxury in the mix, staying on-site is a very smart move.

Buy a multi-park ticket

A multi-park ticket is genuinely worth the upgrade at Universal Orlando because the resort is now bigger and better than ever.

With four parks to explore (Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay, and the brand-new Universal Epic Universe, which opened in May 2025), the flexibility to hop between them makes a massive difference to your trip.

It can also work out better value than buying single-park tickets for separate days, as multi-park bundles often cost less per park and give you far more freedom for only a small price increase.

They offer the freedom to hop between multiple parks in one day (or across days), so you’re not locked into visiting just one park per day, which means you can fit more in, for the same or slightly higher cost.

Being able to move freely between parks means you can respond to real-time ride wait times and weather shifts, too.

And if you’re a Harry Potter fan, park-to-park access remains essential – the Hogwarts Express still only runs between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

With four parks’ worth of rides, lands, and experiences to fit in, a multi-park ticket gives you the freedom to see it all without compromise and get more for your money.

Arrive early, stay late

To make the absolute most of your time at Universal Orlando, arrive before the park opens, and leave when the park shuts.

Arriving early gives you a huge advantage as you can get through security quickly, head straight for the big-ticket rides before queues build, and enjoy those first few hours when the parks feel calmer and cooler.

On the flip side, staying late is just as rewarding.

Crowds naturally thin out as people peel off for dinner, meaning wait times often drop in the evening.

Plus, you’ll get to experience the parks after dark, when the atmosphere completely transforms, and you can catch nighttime shows or fireworks.

It’s a long day, yes, but it’s easily the best way to maximise your time (and your ticket).

Use the single-rider queue

If you’re here for the thrill and don’t mind being separated from your friends for a few minutes, the single-rider queue is a brilliant time-saver.

Many of the major rides have one, and it allows solo guests to fill any empty seats, which often means a much shorter wait.

It’s especially handy if you’ve already ridden something together and want to go back for round two.

You can still queue together and enjoy the build-up, you’ll just be split up for the ride itself.

It’s a small trade-off for potentially shaving a huge amount of time off your wait!

Bring a bum bag – don’t bring a backpack

For all rides at Universal, you will need to stash your bag away in a locker. These lockers are really small and short – imagine a large letterbox that is quite deep but very short.

You’ll probably struggle to fit a backpack or handbag in there, especially if it’s structured rather than flexible.

Bring a bum bag (or fanny pack) or a tote bag to carry your essentials in.

The viral Uniqlo bum bag is absolutely perfect for visiting the theme parks, as you can fit tonnes of stuff in them and it will definitely fit into the lockers.

In mine, I had a rain poncho, a small bottle of water, a wand, sun cream, phone, spare charger, motion sickness bands, a snack bar, and sunglasses.

You’ll be amazed at how much you can fit into one of these bags!

I love it so much I’ve now bought two – one in black, one in cream.

Always be prepared for rain!

Southern Florida has a tropical climate, and from around May to October, they have their “rainy season”.

If you’re planning a trip to Orlando during this period, then a rain poncho or jacket is not just a suggestion, but a necessity.

Florida’s unpredictable weather can turn sunny skies into torrential downpours in a matter of minutes, and you will get absolutely drenched if you don’t have a rain jacket or poncho.

If you’re travelling on a budget, then I highly recommend bringing your own rain jacket or poncho from outside the park.

Inside the park, two rain ponchos will set you back around 25 dollars (!).

25 dollars for essentially just a thin sheet of plastic with the Universal Orlando logo on the back.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Universal had found a way to make it rain, as they must make tonnes of money off rain poncho sales from tourists caught unawares.

Plan everything in advance

One does not simply plan a trip to Universal Orlando.

If you want to make the most of all Universal Orlando Resort has to offer and minimise your time spent standing in queues, then planning ahead is essential.

Universal Orlando is huge, and the moment you step inside, it can feel like sensory overload in the best way: rides, shows, shops, snacks, characters… all begging for your attention.

With limited time, you’ll almost certainly need to prioritise.

Decide which lands matter most to you (are you a Diagon Alley devotee or a Jurassic Park loyalist?), which rides are non-negotiable, and which snacks you absolutely must try.

Mapping out your day means you’re not making decisions on the fly or zig-zagging across the parks unnecessarily, and you’re far more likely to fit in your favourites without feeling rushed.

A little preparation here makes your entire visit smoother and calmer, so you can focus on just having fun when you get there.

Download the Universal Orlando app

Downloading the Universal Orlando app is one of the simplest ways to make your trip run smoothly, and it’s essential if you want to move around the parks efficiently.

The app shows live wait times, ride closures, and show schedules, so you can plan your day in real time rather than walking across the park only to discover a 90-minute queue!

You can also access mobile food ordering (a lifesaver at peak times), check park maps, and view details for character meet-and-greets and special events.

If you’re staying on-site, your hotel key and early entry information are stored in the app too.

It basically becomes your digital guidebook, time-saver, and crowd-dodging tool in one, helping you spend less time faffing and more time actually enjoying the parks.

Head for the busiest rides first

There are certain rides at Universal Orlando that will always have massive queues, no matter what time of year you visit.

These headline attractions can hit eye-watering wait times within minutes of the park opening, so it’s worth heading straight for them as soon as you enter.

Getting to the big rides early puts you ahead of the crowds and dramatically cuts down on the time you’ll spend queueing later in the day, so make a beeline for your top rides first thing.

Rides I’d recommend hitting as early as humanly possible include Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, VelociCoaster, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Super Nintendo World and the Ministry of Magic area should be your first stops.

Find out which rides are bad for motion sickness

Some of the rides at Universal Orlando, usually the simulators and 3D attractions, can trigger serious motion sickness, even for people who don’t normally struggle with it.

If you’re prone to feeling queasy, it’s absolutely worth researching which rides are notorious for this and planning your day with that in mind.

Not all motion-heavy rides are created equal, and some will hit harder than others.

Spacing them out can make a huge difference.

Try to avoid jumping straight onto a screen-based ride right after lunch, and maybe save the more intense attractions for earlier in the day when you’re feeling fresh.

It’s also helpful to know which rides offer stationary seating or less disorienting viewing options, so you can still experience the fun without the aftermath.

Doing a little homework here means fewer wobbly legs, fewer headaches, and a far more enjoyable day overall.

Check what nights the evening shows are

Universal does not have a daily fireworks show like at Disney World, but there is a Night-Time Hogwarts Lights show that you absolutely cannot miss.

This isn’t on every night so you need to look up when this is happening and make sure that your Orlando itinerary is planned so that you’re in the right park at the right time.

The timings can be a little unpredictable, and the app isn’t always the most forthcoming – sometimes it simply says the show isn’t available without noting when it will return.

It’s worth checking the app daily (and even speaking to staff if you’re unsure) to make sure you don’t miss it.

Eat early or late (and pre-order your food!)

Food queues at Universal can feel almost as long as the ride queues, especially around peak lunchtime.

If you want to avoid spending half your day waiting for a burger, try to eat either before the rush (around 11am) or after it (around 2–3pm).

It makes a massive difference to both wait times and general stress levels.

Even better, use the mobile food ordering feature on the Universal app – it lets you browse menus, place your order, and pick it up when it’s ready, rather than standing in a long line.

This is what I did when ordering in Springfield at Universal Studios, and it saved us so much time.

Planning your meals this way saves you time, keeps you fuelled, and means you can get straight back to the fun without a mid-day food faff.

Buy costumes and props in advance

It goes without saying that anything you buy inside the parks comes with a serious mark-up, so if you’re planning to dress up, especially for the Wizarding World, it’s well worth sorting your outfits before you go.

Robes, wands, mascots, character tees and themed accessories are all much cheaper when bought ahead of time, and you’ll have a far bigger range to choose from.

Shops like Primark often release affordable official collaborations with Universal properties, and there’s brilliant fan-made merch on Etsy if you want something unique while also supporting small businesses.

Bringing everything with you means you can step straight into character the moment you walk through the gates, without paying theme-park prices for the privilege.

That said, do set some money aside for buying souvenirs and some exclusive park merchandise. I picked up a few pieces from the Hello Kitty x Jaws collab whilst at Universal, which can only be bought here!

Don’t lose your ticket!

It sounds obvious, but one of the best practical tips for Universal Orlando is to keep a tight hold on your ticket, as losing it can cause a real headache.

While you can get a replacement from Guest Services, it depends entirely on how busy they are, and you could end up wasting a frustrating chunk of your day standing in yet another queue.

Keep your ticket somewhere secure and easily accessible (a lanyard or zipped pocket works well), especially if you’re hopping between parks.

A little organisation here saves you from unnecessary stress and ensures you can get straight back to the fun.

4 Park-specific tips for Universal Orlando

Ride the Hogwarts Express both ways

Riding the Hogwarts Express between Hogsmeade Station in Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park and King’s Cross Station in the London area of Universal Studios Florida is an absolute must if you’re in Universal Orlando.

But what some people don’t know is that the experience is different in each direction. The storyline, the characters you see, and the scenes unfolding outside your compartment window all change depending on whether you’re travelling “to Hogwarts” or “back to London.”

If you’re a true Harry Potter fan, or just want to soak up all the park’s finer details, you’ll definitely want to ride it both ways.

Join the queue for Krakatau Aqua Coaster ride at Volcano Bay ASAP

If you’re visiting Volcano Bay, make the Krakatau Aqua Coaster your first priority.

It’s the park’s star attraction, and its virtual queue fills up incredibly quickly. As soon as you arrive, head straight to a TapuTapu station and secure your return time before doing anything else.

Annoyingly, you can’t join the virtual queue for more than one ride at a time, which means getting Krakatau locked in early is essential.

Once you’ve reserved your spot, spend the wait time enjoying rides with no queue or very short waits, or simply sunbathing – it’s the best way to maximise your time without just sitting around.

After you’ve ridden Krakatau, you can finally join the queues for the other big-name attractions and work your way through the rest of the park without missing out.

Ride Velocicoaster at Night

It’s hard to pick a favourite ride, but if I had to choose, I think I’d pick VelociCoaster. And riding the VelociCoaster at night is honestly one of the best experiences in the entire park.

It’s pretty thrilling during the day, but it definitely feels faster and even more atmospheric once the sun goes down.

Because you can’t see where you’re heading, the drops and twists hit harder. All you can make out are the lights shimmering across the lagoon as you whip past, which is insane.

And I’ve heard that if you time it perfectly, you might even catch the fireworks mid-ride… something I’d absolutely love to experience one day!

Keep your Harry Potter wand

If you’re a seasoned theme park visitor and have been to multiple Universal parks around the world, make sure you hang on to the wand you buy in the Wizarding World.

The interactive wands work in every Harry Potter land globally – Orlando, Hollywood, Osaka, and even the newer locations as they open.

That means all the spell-casting spots, shop windows, and special effects will recognise your wand no matter which park you’re in.

It’s such a fun little detail, and it saves you from buying a new one every time you visit.

I’ve been using the wand I bought from Universal Studios Hollywood in 2018, and it still works today.
