Illumicrate Unboxing #2 – A Bookish Subscription Box

Illumicrate 1

Illumicrate is a quarterly subscription box for book lovers set up by Daphne at Winged Reviews. This subscription service is still fairly new with the first Illumicrate box being shipped back in November 2015 and this is the second. I was really impressed by the first box (you read my review of it here), but I was nervous about subsequent boxes perhaps being less appealing. When you sign up for this subscription box, you are automatically subscribed on a rolling basis so I actually ended up purchasing the second box by accident but I’m really glad that I did.

The second box exceeded my expectations by far and is much, much better than the first one was in my opinion. When I opened this box I felt a great feeling of excitement at having received so many  pleasant bookish surprises. It’s the anticipation of receiving a box full of goodies each month that keeps people buying subscription boxes and without that feeling of excitement people quickly lose interest and unsubscribe. I was pleased to find that Illumicrate managed to step up its game from the last box and provide something even more exciting, which will no doubt keep people coming back for more.

Each box includes a new release as well as bookish goodies such as bookmarks, jewellery, stationery etc. and there are 3-5 items per box. In this box I received:

by Susan Dennard

Bookish Quote Pencils

by Pobble and Ping

Loveboat Set

by BeeDoo

I was so excited to open up this box to find a set of three bookish pencils (yeah, I’m rly cool🙈) as I’ve seen a lot of these around on Etsy and I’m a sucker for good quote. These colourful pencils say: “I’d rather be reading”, “Read, write, repeat” and “A good book has no ending”. The problem now is that they’re too pretty I don’t want to sharpen them!

Next up, I got some magnetic bookmarks which are simply adorable! I get so sucked into stories sometimes that I turn into a raging fangirl so these and these are the perfect bookmarks for those un-put-downable books. One of them is simply a super smiley heart and the other is a ship saying “I ship it”. For those of you that don’t know, you “ship” your favourite couples from stories. I’m very excited to start using these and hopefully now I’ll never lose a bookmark again since these are magnetic!

By this point, I was already pretty excited about my new bookish haul and how great these items would look on Instagram (#basic) when I pulled up the bottom compartment of the box to find: Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. I’d never heard of this book before but I have read a Susan Dennard title before, which I loved, so I was incredibly excited to get my hands on another one of her books. I’ve read her novel Something Strange and Deadly, a sort of paranormal romance/mystery, which is quite different from Truthwitch but hopefully the latter will be just as good. Truthwitch is about (you guessed it) witches, magic and a war. It’s already had some pretty good reviews so I’m hoping it’s something that I’ll enjoy too. You can catch up on my review of Something Strange and Deadly here.

Bookcase Pouch

by Elena Illustration

A Darker Scent of Magic Candle

by Simple Candle Co

The It Girl Tote Bag

by Egmont UK

The bookcase pouch is definitely my favourite item in the box. I’m a huge stationery addict and when I was at school buying a new pencil case was the highlight of the year #2cool4school. The colours and the design are really beautiful and I hope that one day I end up with a bookshelf that looks just like that!

Now I’m not a huge fan of candles as I usually find the smell very overpowering or they make me sneeze (very sensititve nose), but I actually really like this candle from the Simple Candle Co. I can’t put my finger on what the scent is but it’s a light, sweet scent, not particularly flowery, but it’s really relaxing. I’ve never really understood why people used candles for relaxation until now so I’m happy I’ve discovered something new.

There’s always some promo stuff for upcoming books in the Illumicrate box and this time I got a tote bag for The It Girl by Katy Birchall, pubished by Egmont UK. There was also a range of bookmarks, badges and leaflets, which has encouraged me to discover new titles that are coming out soon.

All in all, I’m incredibly pleased with the latest Illumicrate box, which was full of stuff that I’d actually buy for myself! Subscription boxes can be very hit and miss but this one was definitely a hit with me and I can’t wait to get stuck into Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. This box comes in at £29.99 with free delivery to the UK (International delivery available), which isn’t bad give the amount of stuff you get. I’d highly recommend signing up to Illumicrate as I’m convinced it’s only going to get better and better with each box! Signing up to a bookish box like this forces you to discover new titles, which you might not have picked up otherwise, and given that it’s a quarterly box, you don’t have to worry about being overwhelmed with stacks and stacks of books each year.

Sure is interesting. I see people getting subscription boxes all the time and unboxing them in YouTube videos. lol I’ve never tried it. I would love to though. I can only imagine the excitement and mystery when the unboxing comes.

Okay first of all, your photography is gorgeous! I’m actually friends with the creator of this and she is amazing. I’ve been seeing so many subscription boxes go around, but this and The Bookish Box by Appraising Pages are always amazing. I’d love to get this one if shipping wasn’t an arm and a leg. I’ll have to check out that candle scent because, like you, I tend to like the more subtle scents!

Ooh this looks so cool. I am big reader so this would be great to try but £30 on a student budget is a tad steep so I might have to stick to just buying books! xxx

Awesome! A book subscriprion box is amazing… you have the chance to discover new books and have a read, but it’s a bit expensive though…

It is fairly pricey but as this is a quarterly subscription box, not a monthly one, it ends up costing the same yearly as other subscription boxes. I agree that it’s a great way to discover titles you’ve never encountered before 🙂

  11. 3rd April 2016 / 6:11 PM

This is such a great idea! I used to have a group of ‘book-lover-friends’ and we would buy different books for each other, each month – like a subscription, but more personal. Really enjoyed your post!

    • 4th April 2016 / 9:28 AM

What a great idea! I should try get something like that set up with my friends. That way you’re pretty much guaranteed to get books you’ll love!
