The Best Bakery In Paris: Du Pain Et Des Idées

Outside Du Pain et Des Idées - best bakery in Paris

There are a few places in Paris that I’ll recommend to anyone who asks, and Du Pain et Des Idées is always top of that list.

I’ve been to this bakery so many times now that it’s become a personal ritual: every time I’m in Paris, I make a point of stopping by (usually more than once!).

After many visits, I can safely say that the hype is justified – this really is the best bakery in Paris.

Inside Du Pain et Des Idées - best bakery in Paris

I first discovered Du Pain et Des Idées thanks to a friend who raved about their pistachio escargot.

I immediately looked this bakery up and, to my surprise, it turned out to be just a few minutes from where I worked in the 10th arrondissement.

I couldn’t believe I’d been living in Paris for almost a year and had only found out about this gem in my final few weeks!

Naturally, I’ve been making up for lost time ever since.

Now, it’s the first place I think of when I start planning a Paris trip. It’s become a non-negotiable stop and a small but essential part of my Paris experience.

If you’re new here, hi! I’m Laura – a self-confessed francophile who fell head over heels for Paris years ago. I studied French literature at Oxford University and spent a year living in the city, wandering its cobbled streets, eating croissants and browsing old bookshops. Paris has never stopped feeling like magic to me, and I return as often as I can. Here, you’ll find my favourite places and experiences in the city that will always have my heart.

What to Order

My absolute favourite item on the menu is the escargot aux pralines. The pastry is soft yet flaky, rich but not heavy, and filled with caramelised almonds and crème pâtissière.

It’s that perfect combination of sweet, nutty, and buttery that the French seem to do effortlessly.

It sounds cheesy, but it’s the kind of pastry that makes you stop mid-bite and groan in delight.

While the escargots are undeniably the stars of the show, I do occasionally branch out. Their pain des amis, a large, rustic loaf, is the kind of bread you dream about.

Crispy on the outside, airy and chewy inside, it’s a staple for many of the best cafés in the city. One of my favourite brunch spots, Holybelly, is just around the corner and uses Du Pain et Des Idées bread for their breakfasts, which tells you everything you need to know about the quality.

If you’re in the mood for something savoury, the bacon and cheese pastry is good too, though, in my opinion, nothing quite beats the escargot.

When to Visit

I’d recommend visiting Du Pain et Des Idées as early as possible after they open. The pastries are freshest in the morning, and you’ll stand a better chance of getting your favourite flavour before it sells out (which it often does).

There’s usually a small queue forming outside by then, a mix of locals on their way to work and tourists who’ve done their research.

Once you’ve got your pastry in hand, you have options: there’s a large communal table just outside the bakery where you can sit with your coffee if there’s space, or you can do what I often do, take your pastries to the Canal Saint-Martin, just a short walk away.

Sitting by the water, unwrapping that perfect spiral of pastry, is one of my favourite Paris rituals.

Step inside, and you’ll quickly understand why Du Pain et Des Idées has such a loyal following. The interiors are stunning – more like a grand Parisian salon than a working bakery.

With mirrors on the walls and ceilings, vintage tiling, and gilded lettering, it feels like stepping into a French château.

How is it that French people can even make queuing for bread and croissants feel elegant?

Though the bakery as it exists today opened in 2002, there’s been a boulangerie on this site since 1889, and that sense of history still lingers in the air.

The Neighbourhood

Du Pain et Des Idées is located in the 10th arrondissement, not far from Canal Saint-Martin. It’s a lively, charming area that feels more local than touristy.

You can easily make a morning of it: grab your pastry, stroll along the canal, and stop for coffee nearby. It’s one of those corners of Paris that’s effortlessly cool but still unpretentious.

Why I Keep Going Back

For me, going to Du Pain et Des Idées is partly about the pastry, and partly about nostalgia.

It’s a reminder of the year I spent living in Paris, of long lunch breaks and quiet mornings before work, of discovering small joys in everyday moments.

I’ve been to many bakeries in Paris since, but none have quite matched the magic of this one. From the setting to the craftsmanship, it’s everything a Paris bakery should be.

Final Tips for Visiting Du Pain et Des Idées

  • Go early: The bakery opens at 6:45am and closes at 8pm on weekdays, but the best pastries often sell out by late morning.
  • Closed on weekends: Plan accordingly – this is a weekday-only treat.
  • Expect a queue: It moves quickly, and it’s worth every minute.
  • Bring cash or card: They accept both, but it’s good to have a few euros on hand.
  • Don’t rush: Take your pastry to the canal or grab a spot outside and enjoy the moment.
