12 Christmas Films to Watch on Netflix This Year

Christmas fever seems to have firmly taken hold even though we are only part way through November, so I thought I’d compile a quick list of what to watch on Netflix this Christmas.

This year there are even more Netflix originals to look out for as well as old and modern Christmas classics to choose from! Here are the top Christmas films to watch on Netflix this year: 

Christmas Family Films

Arthur Christmas

Arthur Christmas is actually one of my all-time favourite Christmas films, and I think it’s seriously underrated! It follows the story of Santa’s Claus’ clumsy son, Arthur who sets out to right a Christmas wrong. A present has been misplaced! They’ve only got two hours to get the present to its young recipient though so it’s a race against time.

The Christmas Chronicles

The Christmas Chronicles comes from the guys who brought us two of the best loved family films: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Home Alone. Expectations are high. 

Teddy and Kate Pierce are left home alone on Christmas Eve so they decide to see if they can catch Santa Claus on camera this year. They get a lot more than they bargained for and end up on an adventure with Santa himself to try and make sure all the presents are delivered before dawn. 

Angela’s Christmas

Angela’s Christmas is a new animated Christmas film coming to Netflix at the end of November. It’s going to a heartwarming tale of love and family at Christmas time as one young girl does all in her power to make sure all are safe and warm. It’s set in Ireland in the early 20th century and there’ll be a few laughs along the way as we follow sweet little Angela on her mission to keep baby Jesus warm.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is one of the most famous Christmas tales ever. In The Man Who Invented Christmas, we see the story behind the story as Dickens puts pen to paper and writes his timeless Christmas classic. It focuses a lot on Dickens’ relationship with his father, who greatly influenced the infamous Ebenenzer Scrooge. Part drama, part comedy, this one is for all the family.

Outnumbered Christmas 2011

Who remembers the good old days of Outnumbered? The Outnumbered Christmas Special used to be my favourite thing to watch on Boxing Day, but alas, those days are over. In the 2011 edition, robbers visit the Brockmans on Boxing Day, but that turns out to be the least of their worries… Outnumbered is a classic that will have the whole family in stitches so definitely one to watch!

Black Adder’s A Christmas Carol

Rowan Atkinson usually makes an appearance on television when the whole family are gathered round and this time the Black Adder Christmas Special is on show. They’ve put a twist on a classic Christmas tale and this time the Spirit of Christmas convinces a Victorian shopkeeper that meanness is worth a try!

A Very Murray Christmas 

A Very Murray Christmas is a critically acclaimed musical comedy starring Bill Murray, George Clooney, Chris Rock and Miley Cyrus, just to name a few. In this twist on usual holiday variety shows, Murray worries that no one will show up due to a snowstorm in New York. What follows is a night of music, mischief and camaraderie with some of the biggest stars in town. 

Romantic Christmas Movies

A Christmas Prince

Netflix really pushed A Christmas Prince as the film to watch last year on their site but it’s still a popular pick in 2018. Obviously, it’s super cheesy, but it’s Christmas and this film will warm your heart. It’s about a budding journalist who finally gets sent to cover a big story. The Prince of Aldovia has come out of hiding after his father’s passing but is he going ascend the throne? Amber soon finds herself deep in royal family drama and there’s a dash of romance too.

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding

I think all my Christmas dreams are coming true because this year we are getting a sequel to the massively hyped “A Christmas Prince”! Will Amber and Richard get their happily ever after as planned or will royal duties get in the way? A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding looks like it’s going to be just as cheesy and romantic as the first film so don’t miss the opportunity to dive right back into the drama of royal life in Aldovia. 

Christmas Inheritance

Another Netflix original, another classic cheese-fest. This is a hugely predictable story about a rich brat who goes off to a remote town where she realises the error of her ways and that there’s more to life than Chanel bags. Still well worth a watch though as it still gives your heart a little flutter and maybe you’ll even shed a tear or two!

The Holiday Calendar

Abby is a budding photographer stuck in a small town in a dead-end job. Then she inherits her grandmother’s advent calendar and fate begins to smile upon her in the lead up to Christmas. It appears that the calendar has a knack for predicting the future and it’s also leading her in a different direction: towards love. Kat Graham plays Abby and Ethan Peck plays her love interest. 

The Princess Switch

If you’ve been wondering what happened to Vanessa Hudgens, well, here she is. The Princess Switch is one of the most hyped romantic Christmas movies on Netflix this year, just as A Christmas Prince was in 2017.

Hudgens plays a young baker who takes a spontaneous trip to Belgravia. Here she meets a stranger that looks exactly like her who is none other than the a Duchess due to marry the Prince of Belgravia. The Duchess wants one last chance at being normal and so a swap is arranged… 

Like Parent Trap but with more romance and more snow. Not one to miss this Christmas! 

Love Actually

Obviously I had to save the best til last!

Finally. After years of incessant tweeting, Netflix has answered the call. Love Actually has arrived on Netflix – a Christmas miracle indeed! Come on, put the telly on, it’s time to watch Hugh Grant do that sexy side shuffle.

What not to watch

I’ve also thrown in two warnings for good measure. If you’re looking for films to AVOID on Netflix this Christmas, I’d put Deck the Halls and Christmas with the Coopers high up on your list. Don’t be fooled by their star-studded casts, both of these films were absolutely slated by critics and viewers alike!
