Isn’t it every Potter fans’ dream to be able to dine in the Hogwarts Great Hall? For students at Christ Church, Oxford, that’s a daily reality, and is actually the very reason I chose this Oxford College. This year, thought I’d share the story of how I celebrated halloween at university in my final year. To celebrate Halloween, Christ Church at Oxford University hosted a charity event for its students whereby they could pay for an even more special Hogwarts experience in the dining hall that inspired the Great Hall in the Harry Potter films. For just £15, students were treated to a magical meal inspired by the Harry Potter series and there were lots of other Potter surprises in store…
Here’s what went down:
First up, everyone received personalised Chocolate Frog cards in their pigeon holes. We were all given special Potter-related names for the evening, which were based on our real names. My surname is Hartley so I was Laura Lockheart for the night ☺
Dress robes and gowns (jacket + tie). Witch hats encouraged. Costumes definitely an option.
You may be wondering why everybody at Oxford owns a gown akin to those at Hogwarts. It it compulsory at Oxford University to wear this black gown to your matriculation, to your exams and to formal dinners. It’s a tradition that Oxford has always had and it’s stuck!
Upon arrival, we were encouraged to pick up a wand or a Hogwarts scarf to add to our costumes. At Christ Church we have to wear black gowns when we eat in formal hall anyway so most people were already wearing their Hogwarts robes. In the antehall, the Hogwarts theme tuned was played as we sipped on “felix felicis” (bucks fizz). I may have started to tear up at this point. The hall was decorated with pumpkins, howlers and more on the inside.
Now Christ Church food is not the best so this menu definitely sounds a lot snazzier than it actually was but we all appreciated the effort that went into trying to jazz it up for us.
Supreme of Dragon
with Lizards’ Tails and Mixed Mandrake
Of course, before the feast began the choir sang The Hogwarts Song.
Then Dumbledore gave his welcome speech.
But the best bit?
At the end of the feast, Quirrell ran in screaming “Troll in the Dungeon” “thought you ought to know” before collapsing onto the floor.
This event was just one of the many quirky things that I experienced during my time at Christ Church! Check out this post for 15 more facts about Christ Church you probably didn’t know about and this post for 10 more reasons to apply to Christ Church.
