The Film Industry’s Insurance Risks: Game Of Thrones Production Costs

Making a film is ridiculously expensive. Everybody knows that. But did you know that huge amounts of money are also spent on insurance against things going wrong on set?

So how much does film insurance cost? Of course you’d expect there to be some sort of insurance in place but could you ever have imagined that it would cost $50 million to cover the cost of Paul Walker’s death for Fast & Furious 7? What about the $1.8 million spent when Robert de Niro underwent prostate cancer treatment during the filming of Hide and Seek? Or that a whopping seventy people would be injured in the making of Roar (involving real lions!)?

Whilst these figures are shocking, I was most sad and surprised to see that the Game of Thrones set damaged an ecosystem in Malta. I absolutely love this TV show and it’s disappointing to hear that those amazing sets have come at the cost of some of nature’s protected beaches. I guess great things rarely come without some losses…

All in all, these facts about how much film disasters cost have taught me to never underestimate the value of good insurance. I think this post demonstrates just how devastating a disrupted plan could be and though I doubt any of you will ever end up involved in cases for $50 million, it’s better to be safe than sorry! Find out more about Aon’s insurance solutions here.

Have a look at the infographic below to see what other shocking figures have been spent to produce some very famous films! See how much film insurance costs for Fast and Furious 7 and more!

Which of these figures shocks you the most?

You really don’t think about how dangerous it could be. I saw about the Harrison Ford case with Stars Wars recently and I couldn’t believe it x

Actually making a film without stunts is a big risk too as you can’t guarantee how well it will do even with bankable stars. Interesting reading!

Filmmaking is a very risky business, I’m not sure I’d like to be the guy who gives the go ahead for a movie that eventually flops!

You hear how films cost x amount but you don’t really take it all in. Some big money gets spent to make these films for our entertainment

    • 16th Mar 2016 / 3:32 PM

It is astonishing how much money people are willing to spend on making a movie that is purely for entertainment when there are so many other causes out there :/

I knew there’s insurance involved but didn’t realize it would cost this must! It’s insane.
