Making a film is ridiculously expensive. Everybody knows that. But did you know that huge amounts of money are also spent on insurance against things going wrong on set?
So how much does film insurance cost? Of course you’d expect there to be some sort of insurance in place but could you ever have imagined that it would cost $50 million to cover the cost of Paul Walker’s death for Fast & Furious 7? What about the $1.8 million spent when Robert de Niro underwent prostate cancer treatment during the filming of Hide and Seek? Or that a whopping seventy people would be injured in the making of Roar (involving real lions!)?
Whilst these figures are shocking, I was most sad and surprised to see that the Game of Thrones set damaged an ecosystem in Malta. I absolutely love this TV show and it’s disappointing to hear that those amazing sets have come at the cost of some of nature’s protected beaches. I guess great things rarely come without some losses…
All in all, these facts about how much film disasters cost have taught me to never underestimate the value of good insurance. I think this post demonstrates just how devastating a disrupted plan could be and though I doubt any of you will ever end up involved in cases for $50 million, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
