5 Great Housewarming Gift Ideas

So whilst I was busy finishing up my year abroad, most of my friends here in England were graduating. It’s scary to think that people my age are already getting on with their ‘adult’ lives whilst I’m still floundering about where life is going to take me. With the housing market the way it is, the majority of my friends will be staying at home, despite the fact that they’ve got well paid jobs. There are some, however, who will be flying the nest and moving out of their family homes. Whether or not they throw housewarming parties, I think it’s a lovely idea to get them a little something to celebrate the occasion.

So without further ado…

1. A Map

Bit of a strange one to start with but I’ve received numerous compliments about this map I received a few years for my birthday. It’s a scratch map so it arrives completed covered in gold and you use a penny to scrape it away and reveal the countries you’ve been on holiday to. Mine one looks fairly colourful because I’ve been to China, Russia and America but really I haven’t been a huge number of countries. I think this a wonderful present that will be treasured for life – plus, it’s just pretty fun scratching them off!

2. A Bread Maker

I think the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house. It’s often what makes a house a home. If your friend has just moved into their first home, it’s unlikely that they’ll have lots of nifty appliances like a smoothie machine, an ice cream maker or even a bread machine. The idea of walking into the house and smelling fresh bread is perhaps a little outdated, but why should it be? It’s one of he most homey and heartwarming moments. What’s more, bread makers these days can be used for much more than just making bread. You can mix cake batter or even make dumpling skins! Check out these Bread machine recipes by Panasonic.

3. A Cactus

Cacti are all the rage at the moment and it baffles me as to how this prickly plant has managed to make itself so popular. I now have several of these funny little plants sat on my windowsill and I’m sure most of you do too. Potted plants are always a safe bet as a housewarming gift and cacti are even better because they’re basically impossible to kill. Buy a few little ones and they’ll brighten up any room (super instagrammable no less!)

4. Books!

Couldn’t write a blog post without including books in some way could I? I always judge people when I go to their houses based on their book collection and which titles they’ve decided to have on display. I think books make wonderful decorative pieces (after you’ve read what’s inside). If you’re unsure what to go for, pick a few classics with new covers, these are all the rage at the moment and they’re so beautiful!

5. Crockery

How adorable is this tiny teacup? Stuff like this only gets used for very special occasions but it looks great on a nice shelf or glass cabinet. I feel like people rarely buy things like this for themselves as they’re usually handed down or gifted, so gift your friend something special and delicate. You could even get it personalised!

What sort of stuff would you give as a housewarming gift?

I usually just take some wine and chocolate, as I don’t want to buy someone something that is going to clutter up their house.

There’s some great housewarming present ideas here. I totally agree about the smell of bread, even if it is outdated there’s no better smell.

Oooh these are fantastic ideas!! I really would like a scratch map for my hallway. I would probably buy a book, something that’s coffee table worthy and a conversation starter.
