Your Holiday Health Checklist For Summer 2017

With summer just around the corner, there’s a good chance you’ve got some exciting travel plans coming up. As I’m graduating this year, I’m planning on doing lots of travel this year and will be off to Germany, China, Japan and Korea! However, before you jet off, it’s important to think about your wellbeing and how you can look after your health while you’re away. To make sure you feel great all holiday, keep reading.

Pack your medicines

To make sure you’re fully prepared for your upcoming trip, it pays to pack some medical supplies. From plasters, to paracetamol, to travel sickness tablets, there are a whole host of useful products you can take with you “just in case”. It’s also important that you don’t forget any medicines that you take on a regular basis, such as contraceptives.

Think about the bigger health risks too. For instance, depending on which country you’re travelling to, you might need to take extra precautions to ensure you’re protected from certain diseases and infections. One example of this is malaria. This disease can be found in over 100 countries across the globe, including areas such as Africa, Asia and South America. This treatment is to be started two days before you leave for your travels, and it should be continued every day while you’re away. Take sun safety seriously

We all know just how harmful the sun’s rays can be. Too much exposure can damage your skin and put your health at risk, so it’s vital that you take sun safety seriously while you’re away. Ideally, you should apply a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor to any parts of your body that will exposed to the sun, not forgetting areas such as your face, neck, ears and tops of your hands and feet. You should apply it liberally and frequently throughout the day, especially after you’ve been for a dip in the water – even if the product you’re using is “water-resistant”.

It’s also a good idea to avoid sunbathing when the sun is at its strongest between the hours of 11am and 3pm. Instead, you could retreat to a shaded spot. If you are going to be out and about in the sun, think about covering up with loose-fitting clothes, a hat and a pair of shades.

Stay hydrated

While you’re on holiday, make sure you stay well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is an absolute must, especially if you’re jetting off to hot climates. Skipping on your daily intake is bad news for your health and it could even lead to dehydration, which can leave you feeling tired, thirsty and lightheaded. So, to ensure you feel your best all holiday, it’s vital that you drink up.

Think about food hygiene

Before you tuck into the local delicacies, it’s important to think about food hygiene. Particularly in countries where sanitation is poor, it pays to be careful when it comes to mealtimes, so try and stick to foods that you know have been cooked thoroughly and avoid anything raw. If you can, pick restaurants that have a good reputation of serving safe food.
